GO! Smell the Dubai Saturday Sanctuary, flowers

Posted on October 26th, 2008 by Jim

A BIG thanks to Dubai 92 FM DJ Martin Metcalf of the Saturday Sanctuary show who coincidentally played my fave 4 heros track, les fleurs which some of you might recognise:

If there was an anthem for GO! Smell the flowers this would be it as it’s one of the most uplifting songs ever to grace the earth.

Martin even played it for us again last weekend and has joined our facebook group! Thanks again Martin, keep spinning those wheels of steel down at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort  - Barasti bar.  Thanks for the inspiration.

What would your anthem be for GO! Smell the flowers & why? Do tell.

  1. I’m sorry Jim but that is about the most cheesey number I’ve ever heard. My back was in spasms caused by the largest cringe I’ve had in years whilst listening.
I think I’ll maybe chill out with some Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller instead.

  2. I need to think about this some more, but “Les Fleurs” seems to fit. I didn’t expect it, but between the song and the video, I teared up and felt inspired. It reminds me of what I want for my life and others. The song takes the metaphor of a flower growing for seemingly simple purposes that make people unique and happy. Then, that it speads love, joy, faith and hope to forlorn which to me is inspiration. And, if you look within yourself, every person has that flower seed of beauty and power. Then, it talks about being free, be yourself, darkness is gone, and throw off your fears for a new time is born.

To me, that is GSTF. Flowers and the garden is a metaphor here for a community that hopefully inspires, encourages, brings joy, support and a place to be open and yourself which in turn should make us better, happier people who if they take the challenge to be inspired find their own beauty and power to live fully and spread that to others.

I might find another song, but I can’t think of another one that really uses the flower metaphor to the same extent that it is meant for at GSTF. I know sentimental, but I am proud that I have that side in my heart. However, it is tender like a flower and can be crushed. But, don’t some crushed flower deposit their seeds and multiply or become rich mulch used to grow hearty flowers? I love metaphor and can go on, but STOP!!

    It has to be

You don’t bring me Flowers - Barbara Streisand/Neil Diamond

if only for the rather tenuous link

Lifes What You Make it - Talk Talk

because this is what GSTF has taught me

or Bennie and the Jets - Sir Elton John

for our very own Queen, long may he reign.

  5. Jim,

You got my mind started on music…don’t do that…it will run around in my head for days now. I thought of a whole bouquet of songs, but none are appropriate, but maybe it might help someone think in a different direction.

    SONGS WITH FLOWERS:
“If You Are Going To San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)” ~ Scott McKenzie
“Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” ~ Written by Pete Seeger (Peter, Paul & Mary) and Joe Hickson (folk singer); PPM is the version that runs in my head.
“You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” ~ Neil Diamond/Barbra Streisand…best Grammy moment!!!

    SONGS WITH GARDENS
    “Garden Party” ~ Rick Nelson
    “Octopus’s Garden” ~ Beatles

    SONGS WITH DASIES
    “Daisy Jane” ~ America

    SONGS WITH SPECIFIC FLOWERS
“Bread and Roses” ~ Judy Collins
    “Desert Rose” ~ Sting
“For the Roses” ~ Joni Mitchell
“Kiss From a Rose” ~ Seal
    “Wildflower” ~ Skylark
“Roses are Red (My Love)” ~ Bobby Vinton

Now, you have to stop me from songs running in my head and my head running through my files of songs…AAAAAAA!!
