Arvind here flower people, enjoying a beautiful sunny autumnal day here in the UK today, having just had a leisurely (i.e. lazy!) breakfast. The leaves on the trees have begun to turn brown before they disperse for another year and the copper beech tree outside my house looks quite majestic.
To get my day off to a healthy start, I feasted this morning on freshly made mung bean sprouts.
It is quite easy to make your own bean sprouts at home.
Bean sprouts are considered to be a “super food” as they contain a lot of enzymes and high levels of anti-oxidants. They are also packed with proteins, vitamins, minerals and are easily digestible.
Being a vegetarian I take great care in souring the right food for me and being Indian, I have been brought up on mung beans.
The sprouts are a “living” food and by eating them raw you will be able to absorb the healthy enzymes and amino acids created in the germination process and you will not be destroying all the goodness - the perfect start to my day.
Wherever you are in the world, vegetarian or not, what is your ideal food to start off your day? Let me know!

Coffee!!! That is a food right…it comes from a bean, so it has to be food. Okay, I never have been a breakfast person. But, yogurt or string cheese and an English muffin w/butter or whole wheat bread with thin layers of peanut butter and Nutella. Usually, I don’t really have breakfast, but now I am hungry…Thanks, Arvind.
I love sprouts, my cook used to make them for me as a kid. She would grow them in a hanging moist cloth bag. Yummy when spiced with salt and “chaat” masala.
Best way to start the day: 4 fried eggs, sausages, roast left over from dinner, lots of toast, 2 cups of milk !
RYK - I would have thought you would be keen on some Indian concoction of masal dosa etc first thing in the morning?!
every Sunday. Cook turns out fantastic dosas and idlis and it’s a treat. Sunday lunch is usually Goa style prawn curry and rice with crispy Bombay Duck (it’s a fish) yummy yummy. Made my hungry all over over again.
Arvind - for Mung beans read bean sprouts…is that correct?
The spa raved about them - packed with nutrients….
Chocolate coated, of course.
Yes, Jim - the same thing.
Check out the link above to find out how to make your own at home.
Chocolate coating optional
I love many types of sprouts in my salads.
Ok cool…
I add them to curries all the time - a bit bitter on their own so I lemonise them (add lemon)
Corn Arvind
Corn
Corn Barbara?!
Straight on the cob or cooked in your own special secret way? Do share…
My perfect food to start the day is:
COFFEE!!!!
hmmmmm Get my day off to a great start….
Second would be toasted Muesli.. with lots and lots and fruit in there…
and as a third I would have to throw in Cold Apple Pie
Yep thats my top three…
hehehehehehe
dont mind Sprouts but as a snack or on the side of a dish they can be refreshing…
Definitely, not breakfast food for me. Oh, I also like to put them into some sandwiches or wraps.
They’re great on a salad roll with Avocado spread instead of butter… yum
Whoah!!!! I just heard about and ate sprouts for the first time last week. They’re great!
LOL!!! What kind of sprouts and what part of the US are you from?
Sprouts rock - I don’t at present, but have spent a great deal of time growing my own sprouts. Mung beans, lentils, alfalfa and others - just experimenting to see what grows well.
But my favorite food in the morning? Depends where I am. I love a good jook/congee. I also love a good bircher museli. And for Sundays, a fry up of eggs on salmon with hollandaise sauce. Mmmm…
