GO! Eat less fat and sleep more!

Posted on August 30th, 2008 by Jim

Brazillian researchers have found that the more fat you eat each day, the less likely you are to get a good night’s sleep.

Studies in their sleep lab (not a place to party!) showed that overall, the more fat people ate each day:

  • The more times they woke up, tossing and turning, throughout the night.
  • The greater the chance of abnormal breathing while sleeping.
  • The less time spent in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep each night. REM sleep is the sleep state during which dreaming occurs.

So, if you sometimes have trouble dropping off try cutting back on fat particularly with your last meal of the day.

    I dont know….
    could be something in it….
I find it makes no difference what I eat before bed or as my last meal of the day.. If I am going to sleep I am out to it fairly quickly as a rule… but If I am not I dont even bother going to bed… there doesnt seem to be anything in what I eat that makes a difference… but might look closer as the insomnia comes round again…
    thanks…

No worries - one thoery is that he body has to process the bulk insteads of resting organs like the heart, liver n kidneys.

        It makes sense….
I am heading into a period of sleeplessness at the moment, no there yet.. so I will monitor my fat intake and see what happens will let you know the results if you like…

the bodies internal organs sleep while we sleep.

        erm. no they don’t.

  3. That doesn’t seem to make a difference to me whether I sleep or can’t even when I’m not dealing with insomnia. However, I do not that carbohydrates seem to make me sleep more soundly.

But CC lack of sleep versus a good nights sleep - don’t you feel the difference?

      • Purple13 says:

certainly can feel the difference jim but i think it has more to do with switching your brain off for a good nights sleep.

OK so certain foods may not help but with so many other things to worry about and remember to do, what i eat before bedtime isnt the highest on my to do list - by time kids have actually gone to bed, it’s a miracle some nights i ever get undressed.

        • That’s a little too personal…what you wear or don’t wear to bed is up to you. Just kidding. LOL at your answer!!!

you’ve got to have kids to really appreciate what a good nights sleep is when they’re at their grannies or a sleepover.

Funny thing is you still worry about them.

I remember the first time we went out for a drink and left our first child - Max - with his grandparents babysitting.

By 9.30 we were ho-humming and checking our watches every 5 mins - we were hopeless and back by 9.45!

        • I’m sure you are right. I don’t have children, but I can really appreciate the lack of sleep factor. One of my friends who has a 12 year old and a 2 year old would call me when she was awake no matter what the time was. Since I have insomnia, it made sense I could be awake anyway. If I was sleeping, all telephone ringers are turned off and only the quiet answering machine is on.

And, I think about your house too with the pets. House sitting for friends with three indoor cats, three outdoor cats, and two indoor dogs was terrible in trying to sleep. They played all night in a multi-layered home…lots of stairs to go bounding up and down and try the game throw your body against the door and then once your let in try to get out the same way.

I know my experience will never compare to the joys and little pains of having children. Sleep well my friend.

      • Yes, but I’ve had insomnia for most of my life and especially within the last five years…I’m not sure what normal sleep is…I can’t wait to find out. Right now, two consequetive nights is great and I certainly feel the difference.

This is quite true for people prone to heartburn (GERD) as they have more symptoms if they lie down after eating. Connection between the stomach and esophagus becomes horizontal when they lie down. That’s why it’s advisable for them to raise their head of the bed, to maintain element of gravity to keep acid in the stomach. Eating before bed may cause trouble.
