GO! Ease your back pain!

August 20th, 2008 by Jim

Any wilting flowers with bad backs? It could be down to your posture as you slump over your keyboard and read this.

That’s it - straighten up!

The Alexander technique teaches patients how to sit, stand and walk in a way that relieves pain by focusing on their coordination and posture.

Until now there had been little evidence of the therapy’s long term effectiveness with latest findings published in the British Medical Journal.  About half the UK population suffers from back pain during a year with up to 15% going on to have chronic problems. The experiment, run by researchers at the universities of Southampton and Bristol, found that patients who were taught Alexander technique and combined it with exercise were significantly better by the end of a year.

GO! Put your back into it - any other tips or back issues welcomed here!

pain killers! the stronger the better!

once you’ve got a bad back, it seems you’re always going to have problems thereafter.

trouble is taking time out - you can’t suddenly stop lifting the weekly food shopping or the little kids. Dustbins still need putting out etc so all the awkward bending and lifting jobs that cause the pain still have to be achieved somehow.

Our cold drafty weather doesn’t help much either here in jolly old blighty.

Painkillers?

Surely prevention at source is better than covering up the issue?

erm Purple surely thats womans work.

a man should only injure his back picking up his wallet, picking up a pint or ‘disciplining his wife’ for moaning about her bad back from the shopping/ironing/digging/ploughing etc

My back was injured in a car accident, not my fault, where I my Camry was rear ended by a Ford Explorer pushing me into another large vehicle. I had four months of physical therapy at three times per week. My prognosis would be if I continued with my exercises that I would at maximum reach 80% of my previous abilities. The back exercises really work, but they really should be recommended by a physical therapist after and evaluation to determine which ones will be best. Some of the exercises due to how my injury is would cause the injury to become worse, so don’t take advice from a non professional.

The stalker man who scared me because he wouldn’t leave me alone was not injured. I was the only one injured and had $3000 dollars damage to my car. His insurance company wasn’t being cooperative, so I had to hire an attorney and settlement is coming up or litigation. It looks like I may have out of pocket expenses. This insurance company is the type that would rather spend more money going to court than paying out. My attorney said a few off the record choice words to describe his interactions with them.

sorry CC but if a man was involved it was most likely your fault. were you putting make up on in a mirror? or swerving to avoid a bird? or had the radio taken your mind off the road?

poor bloke.

Okay, the police report stated that he was the only one responsible, but of course, I am a woman and he was a man, so it was my fault. Lucky, I got out of it. I was actually not paying attention (it was rush hour, at about 5 miles and hour…imagine how fast he was going and I was stopped). I was too busy with my hallucination and trying to hit the people back. Hey, one of them kinda looks like you. Just kidding!!! :-)

The do say the guts and the back can be the literal nerve centre for the rest of the body!

Case in point, AC - thanks for sharing.

Just trying to convey that the centre of the body, the source needs to be clear for a smooth flow of energy - maybe its the wrong wording….

What’s you take on the back and nerve endings in terms of say, leg defects due to poor posture, like AC’s example?

Yes, I have had sciatic several times and it is extremely painful through the buttocks and down the leg. I had it so bad once that I couldn’t put any weight on my foot…I had to be assisted or carried. Thank God my husband and I were both younger and weighed less. :-)

hey pagan
its to do with the central nervous system all steming from the spind and depending where in the spinal column an injury takes place the pain can be reflected to another area… this is what happened with my mate… his back was the problem but the pain was in his knee something to do with nerves sent the pain there… dont know exactly how it works but it does…

Was it not just to do with the fact that his back was out of kilter and it had a knock on effect on his knee?

I’ve got a pair of boots that hurt my back so its the same thing but in reverse?

I’ll get my coat.

Oh Lib,

Women’s shoes are the worse thing for backs and feet. When I was younger, it was all about being cute, stylish and not comfort. In the last ten years, it is all about comfort and style…my back, knees, feet, ankles, etc…cannot take it anymore. But, I still get cute, fashionable shoes thanks to the baby boomers I have a lot more to choose from. I was not about to wear my grandmother’s brands!!!!
