Go! Kick the habit
August 13th, 2008 by Mighty MorganMighty Morgan Here!
I have been a smoker since I was 15 years old; when I started smoking I had no understanding of how addictive this habit was and that it would be one that would still control me close to twenty years later.
I have been thinking a lot about the best way to finally quit and desperately trying to muster up the courage to begin a day without my favorite little friend. Monday was that day and today is three days without a cigarette. I also decided that I would begin fasting this past Monday, beginning each day with a saltwater flush to help rid my body of the toxins that have built themselves up in my system through the years.
Amazingly enough I have found that the fasting aspect has made my transition to a non-smoker, dare I say “easy“. In the past few days I have found that the desire to eat has far outweighed any desire to smoke, helping me along the first few days of nicotine withdrawals.
As visions of steak sandwiches, smothered in caramelized onions and melted cheddar served on toasted garlic bread dance in my head, I find no room for the insane thoughts of smoking!
Anyone else ever kicked the “habit”? Any tips or tricks you can share from your own success?

YOU TRAITOR>> ARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH…
only joking…
I have been cutting back this week myself down to 8 a day… from 40-50….
Harder for because Hubby smokes ….
Eating doesnt help me at all …. I enjoy a smoke after a meal… in fact I enjoy one after everything…
When I quit a while ago.. failed attempt the thing I replaced it with was lollies… boiled lollies… want a smoke have a lolly….
but didnt last long, tryied chewing gum.. nope..
so this time I have decided to cut down and stop… but If I want one I have one ….. and the wanting is getting less……
I will never be a non smoker …. I will be a smoker who doesnt who doesnt smoke…..
the difference being I can if I want I just choice not to want too….
Good luck morgan… keep us updated…
Good for you AC -read this and expected a few incoming missiles from Lib, Urban and you to Mighty from smokers corner!
Stubs and stubbies?
I tried a many different tactics in order to ease the amount of smokes per day….none were ever that long lasting..But I’m telling ya the whole fasting aspect is diminishing the desire to smoke 100 fold…some moments I don’t even think about it…my head is too filled with visions of delectable delights

Hiya Morgan, as usual lots of willpower you demonstrate girl!
This Bridget doesn’t smoke, and when she reads what you’re having to go through to quit, boy is she glad she doesn’t ha!
Bridget you should try it?
I thought all french people would never be seen without gitanes??
smoking makes a woman intriguing. A woman of mystery. Sophisticated.
Give it a whirl! I reckon you’d like it.
Morgan- what can I say- quitters never win and winners never quit.
Now get back out there and get back on the smkoing horse!!
Oh but this Bridget doesn’t need a gitane to intrigue Gary.. she just have to show up to create a commotion ha!
and throw an Aussie in the mix.. you’ll have international incident…. followed by a Barbie a party and a brawl.. what can I say….
weekends rule…..
lol
But Urban I don’t wanna
Can’t I just be a quitter????????????????????????

No incoming missile from me, I realise what I do is stupid and would never advocate it.
Good for you Morgan, apparently the desire to eat is actually the desire for nicotine, its the same feeling.
I gave up once for 4 mths, it was the association with alcohol that was the toughie (although I don’t think thats applicable to you) so I changed my drink from white wine to red and even though I started again, I still drink red.
Someone once told me the best thing to do when you are out is to buy 2 drinks and then you don’t have a spare hand to smoke.
But you do end up with a wrecked liver.
Good luck!! I have a sneaky suspicion that if anyone can do it, you can.
I’m not sure if it’s the same feeling…both probably come from the same area of the brain…I get the whole drink and ciggy thing…doesn’t apply to me at the present moment, but it did way back when. Bottom line is that cancer related deaths due to cigarettes is very, very, very real in my family. In fact everyone that has died was in some way shape or form due to complications, whether it be cancer or heart disease.
My sister just went through the whole rigamoral of cancer treatment in the past year so it’s time for me to stop before it gets too late!

Perhaps I just have a bit more determination to see a task through? I started this wonderful daredevil lifestyle of the all action smoker and I don’t intend to stop now. I simply get too many admiring looks off people when I smoke. They daren’t take that step as they worry they will not have the cajones to see it through.
Its not for everyone.
I guess so Urban….Smoking is just not what it used to be. I guess your a stronger person then I am, because honestly I felt all ashamed and weak when I would be standing on the streets avoiding the stares of the non-smokers who would just shake their heads in disgust.
In the end I just don’t have the cajones Urban..but I’m glad that you do
much love as always Urban

It’s interesting that you should post this, only because I am battling the same addiction … and the same desire to quit.
Odd thing, it was EASY to stop when I was pregnant and nursing, but the second each of my children were weaned, I’d go out with friends and VOILA! I’d be a smoker again.
Here’s the kicker, my front left tooth is fake because of an accident I had as a child — the tooth was knocked out so it was replaced with a false one, and about a week ago I noticed that my typically beautiful pearly whites weren’t so pearly white. The gum above the false tooth has developed a nasty ulcer that I’ve never EVER had. It’s not getting better in spite of any medical treatment I administer and it occurred to me that I could be in the beginning stages of oral cancer.
It’s scaring me enough to quit. And while it may be a “day late and a dollar short” — AND even if my dentist gives me a pat on the head to tell me it’s simply a sore and I should have the tooth replaced again — I’m scared.
We always think, “Oh, cancer won’t happen to me …”
Yeah. It can.
BRAVO to you for your brave choice to quit, and even if you have a slip up, don’t kick yourself. Acknowledge the obstacle, don’t give it power! You can do it!
Thanks Blue Collar…lets hope that you do quit and that in the end it’s just a sore…..I’ll say this again..the fasting aspect has made kicking the habit almost easy in retrospect to any other failed attempts….something to look into…..it has also brought my attention to the fact that in some ways I am also addicted to disgustingly delicious foods…the desire to gobble them down shoves the little though of a smoke right out of the brain!

Isn’t one danger though piling on weight with not smoking and then eating all you like - could be a double-double whammy as it were?
Well that is where the fasting aspect comes into place…haven’t been switching one addiction for another…any food I eat is super minimal..so no worries about eating all the wrong foods!

Hey dude, one ciggy kicked is a million never remembered.
Good on you.
I kicked it too. Relapsed once but that was the last time.
There is a good book on it, forgot the name.
If you have the will, carry on not smoking - that was the message.
All peace and good wishes x
NIce one!!!!
