My Poor Baby!

August 7th, 2008 by aussiecynic

I mentioned in the comments that last weekend was horrendous for us here. In many ways it was on so many levels.

It started normally with no hassles, Moppets social calender was set, my online workload organised and Hubby’s horse race schedual sorted….

We have one puppy left from Bonnies’s and Buster’s record breaking litter. The runt remained with us as he was much smaller than the others and very skinny dispite attempts to feed him up.

He is now a bouncing healthy 3 month old puppy, and we have been unable to find a home for him. So he appears to be our new addition…. hmmmm 3 dogs… busy…

On Friday evening he cut the base of his ear… it bleed and bleed… and after much panic and time I stopped the bleeding got him settled and after the normal procedures he was fine. On Saturday morning he scratch it and then shook his head, long floppy ears move pretty fast, his ear swelled up like a stuffed toy, you could actually watch it grow.

I called the vet who is 3 hours away, he said his ear was bleeding internally, forming a giant blood blister. Wait until Monday or Tuesday and bring him up for surgery. We did… after placing a bucket on his head.

On Monday we took him to the vets, when we arrived the vet removed the bucket, the back of his ear had burst slightly and was a mess (nothing we could do it happened on the way up) then as they prepared him for surgery his ear burst… the blood blister… he has had a little of his ear amputated, it is pinned together front and back with multiple button things, as the skinned pulled away from the insides, his head is bandaged and bandaged again, then yesterday because his face has swollen from the trauma, he started to have breathing difficulty, the bandages tightened with the swelling and I had to cut them in places so he could breathe… I dont who had the harder job, me cutting or Hubby holding…

During all this he has not yelped, whimpered, whined, complained in any way shape or form, he has just accepted it and that is that… He is on very strong antibiotics and pain killers which he can only have every 12 hours… the hardest part is the last 2 hours as they have worn off…..

He will be fine and should be back to normal in the next 3-4 weeks… I will have new photos of him hopefully all going well today….

I find most animals are accepting of situations and what is happening far more than people, possibly because they do not understand, but trust their care givers to look after them…

What amazing things have your pets or animals in general shown you over the years?

Nice to see David showing an interest in Mechanical Engineering and Design.
If he needs to discuss any ideas I’d be only to happy to try and help him out. Does he use Caitia or Unigraphics? Maybe he could get his workshop/shed certified to ISO 9000 or TS16949.

Sounds like you had a tough time Aussie. I’m sure you were more traumatised than he was. He will be just fine as he knows you are looking after him. HUGS

Purple13 Says:

Welcome back Sir Elt’ (and David) - things been straighter than george michael round here since you went on your hols’.

Pet problems? well one night when Mandy and girls were away (again!), one of the 5 cats i hadn’t seen for a few days. Late at night it comes in all dirty and scruffy looking and its front legs up round its head like its hobbling.

When i looked closer, it had actually got a front leg up inside its elasticated collar so it was wearing it like a sling - only trouble was it was biting into the armpit area - proper sore.

The cat was wild - couldn’t get near it so in desperation i called next door a- he keeps a harris Hawk - and asked for his help. He was fantastic. Came over with a pair of his falconry gloves and held the cat while i snipped at the elastic trying not to skewer the wriggling cat.

Got it off in the end but it was long process and then the sulky animal bolted under bed and didn’t come out for another 2 days.

We both still got scratched and clawed despite the gloves.

Glad to hear Pup is on the mend.

aussiecynic Says:

The poor cat he must have been terrorfied….
cat stratches can be so bad and deep…. did he mend ok….?????

I’ve never been able to look at a beach ball or someone blowing bubbles with bubblegum ever since, I like tearing around in a golf cart wearing a blazer and cheap boat shoes though.

you just look at him and think you poor bugger… then he wags his tail and waits for a cuddle

Urban Pagan Says:

sad story AC

but the bucket on his head?

are you running puppy guantanamo bay??

only messing hope it all sorts out for you

aussiecynic Says:

thanks heaps Pagan…
a few weeks he should be back to normal..
the bucket aka flower pot.. we had to put on to stop him scratching and moving it about anymore… otherwise it would have just continued to grow and burst at home…. if that would have happened he would have bleed to death.. here with no way to help him…
I am just pleased we got him there in time.

i hope he forgives me for the torture… although my rubbing his face seems to make up for it… think of the worlds worst itch on your nose and you are unable to scratch it for hours.. thats him in the morning… I give him a good 15-20 minutes rubbing on his nose and around the bandages…. he loves it…. and you can see the relief in his eyes… :p

Oh, I just love dog especially cute little black ones, so I almost started crying reading the story. Poor baby and the two of you must be angels for him to trust you so…they know. Animals especially dogs and children know who to like and not like. Growing up our dog loved everyone, but would become extremely happy when certain people came over. However, there were two guys that our female dog had a strange reaction to. One was my horrible step-father’s best friend. She actually tried to bit him which is nothing anyone had seen before…never, ever any aggression let alone biting. The other one, I should have listened to her, was my date. The fur on the back of her neck stood up, she growled and then urinated all over the living room. My mother and step-father were so unaware that they let me go out with him alone!!! I would never let my daughter (if I had one go out alone with such a reaction). Our dog was right, my date who later was my boyfriend in high school was very aggressive and came very close to raping me. (I even ended up with bruises) Then, he got together with one of my friends, had two children, was a snake, was in and out of prison, used and sold drugs, and I don’t want to know what else. Need dogs to check out daughter’s dates when they get that age…if you ever allow it!!! My uncle still says that my cousin can’t date even though she has been married several years. I think he is in denial and doesn’t listen when her mom talks about grandchildren!! LOL. Please do give an update on the puppy…what and ordeal for all!!!

aussiecynic Says:

thanks clueless..
what a tail! I to do trust in my animals reactions…. they get right more often than not…
will give an update after the next vet visit….
I have always had animals around and have learnt to watch them….
Moppet often asked me how I know whats wrong or what they want….. as she was impressed when Bonnie went into early stage labour and I knew….
I told her you just have to watch them and you learn when something is needed, when theres a problem and when they want to play…

btw Moppet isnt allowed a Boyfriend intil she is 17 and no dating until she is 16 she has decided that marriage is not before 26 because she has to many things to do first…. I hope it works this way…. lol

Our dog was amazing.

Moppet is going to be allowed to date!!! LOL!!

Whilst I’m not the biggest fan of kids I don’t think its fair to call them animals, not unless you’ve met them first, although……

very good…
thats why we have so many kept trying till we got we liked….

Lib Says:

Booooo!

I hope he’s better soon AC. I do sympathise, all my family are massive animal fans and we’ve had our pet traumas through the years.

Including one cat that was shot up the arse with a pellet gun.

aussiecynic Says:

oh my god… thats awful…
did you find out who did it…
I hope if you did someone gave him/her a dose of their own medicine….
was the cat alright…. oh that is terrible

Lib Says:

We think one of the farmers did it.

He was a long haired ginger thing (adorable) so we think he might have been mistaken for a fox.

He was fine though. Just couldn’t sit down for a bit after it was taken out.

Poor baby…Ouch!!! So, it was probably and accident? Then, I don’t need to become outraged.

aussiecynic Says:

I am pleased to puss was ok..
I bet he was very careful about where he placed himself after that…
but the poor guy..

Urban Pagan Says:

the farmer or the cat lib? its not clear……
