GO! Arrest Brits for sex on a Dubai beach.

July 13th, 2008 by Jim

The two Brits who were arrested after allegedly being found in a clinch on Jumeirah beach in Dubai following an afternoon of drinking last Friday have been arrested and could face up to 6 years in prison.

As featured recently in comments at Flowers Founder Mike French’s post ‘have sex in the park but keep dogs on a lead’ this shows the variety in society norms all over the world. Their arrests come amid a crackdown on “indecent” sunbathing and public kissing and topless sunbathing in Dubai.

A time and a place?

Friends claimed the couple have since gone through a hasty civil marriage ceremony to reduce any possible sentence they might face as sex outside of marriage is illegal in Dubai. The couple attended a fill-your-boots “late brunch”, with unlimited drinks - including beer, wine and spirits. Running for three hours until 7pm the event offered unlimited drinks for a flat fee of 250 dirhams (£34.50 / U.S $70) and let their emotions roll on the public beach.

Despite the official reportedly letting them off with a warning, the pair were allegedly discovered in the same position shortly after and arrested. The ‘lady’ concerned is also facing possible charges of assaulting the arresting officer and public drunkenness.

“Because this is known everywhere they’re going to make an example of us and we’re going to get a higher sentence,” a newspaper quoted her as saying.

Comments welcomed - a time and a place but what about the ‘punishment?’ Do tell!

Radio 2 (UAE) had a competition today for a free weekend for two at the Liwa Hotel
It was won by a woman who announced on air that she would take her boyfriend and propose to him. So I sent an SMS to the DJ and asked if it was the stations policy to flout the laws of the UAE…….I’m still waiting for a response!

Forgot to mention that the female DJ specifically chose the ‘lucky winner’ because the woman mentioned that she’d make the proposal over the weekend. The rest of the competitors with correct answers didn’t have a chance. Rigged competitions whatever next!

I say fair play to dubai!!
good to see they have their moral compass firmly in place- I think its great about people not married getting locked up for having sex. With such great, rational laws I would assume that affairs don’t happen there and prozzies would be non existent. oh hold on……….

It is all about show - not morals. Dubai has the highest prostitute per capita ratio of anywhere in the world.

I think in the United States you would get impriosend for sex in public. If it was Texas you’d be shot on the spot!

It’s all very well to bash Dubai, because it’s part of the Middle East, which is an area considered still in the stone ages. But Dubai is different, it’s an innovation economy, with 98% of revenues coming from non oil sources, so I think we should treat it with healty respect. I think it’s downright cheap of the woman arrested to run down Dubai for what she did; Dubai should just deport her and get it over with.

correction ryk its caught in the stonings age

and barry I was being sarcy- but surely thailand with its extensive ‘brass houses’ has more ‘happy ending’ girls than dubai? surely in dubai the high end roger moores are doing it for money- not for a genuine love of the job like the ones in thailand/euston steam and sauna?

In the USA, the law that would be broken would be public indecency or nuisance. But, they probably would just shoo you away. But, given the second round and becoming allegedly assaultive, they probably would go for public drunkenness and let you sober it up in the jail and release you…depended on the assault thing.

So … lemme get this straight …
The couple in question are not citizens of the UAE, they were on holiday, got busted twice having sex on the beach after having too many “sex on the beach” (it’s a popular drink) and then they had to get married? Seems to me that they’ve been punished enough.

On the other hand, while they are most certainly going to be used as an example, there is no cure for “stupid”.
When visiting another country, it’s always a good idea to try and follow THEIR customs and rules within the guidelines of our own common sense. If I’m visiting a canniballistic tribe, I’ll excuse myself from dinner.
But seriously, when I visit Morocco (for example) I will wear modest clothing, covering my arms with sleeves and a simple scarf over my hair. I CARE very much how my brothers and sistahs feel around me, and if I CARE enough that means while I don’t necessarily agree with their philosophies or theologies — I’ll do my best to accomodate them when I am VISITING their culture.

This couple is being punished for being ignorant. Read the whole article. The guy had been tossed out of a bar earlier in the evening for behaving badly.
As I said, “no cure for stupid”.

i agree about the ‘when in rome’ thingy

thats why when I visit the UAE next year I fully intend to push walls on people I think might be gay, stone a few women for breathing the same air as a man, and knock women around. I may even be nice to westerners with money while funding obl and co.

it is- largely because the koran says so and I trust the words of a 54 year old man who married a 9 year old kid to ironically give me my moral compass

Wow. That IS ironic!
I could probably point you in some other direction, but my guess is that it would be a waste of time. Sounds like you’ve got your mind made up.

the word in the book is unalterable and fact. even when muslims can’t agree on it.

the only thing I don’t like is the non-drinking thing but I am sure I can find a way round it

Bottom line is that they should have respected the laws of the country that they were in.

To be let off with a caution and then to immediately do it again?

They should be locked up for crimes against intelligence if not anything else.

I have recently watched a documentary where a german woman got pulled over for speeding by the police but couldn’t afford to pay her fine so ended up being ‘over friendly’ to the two policemen. in the same documentary a similar thing happened when a plumber went to fix a womans washing machine and she ended up being a bit too friendly with him.

Finally 6 firemen turned up at college party which had got a bit out of hand and ended up being a bit over friendly with the ladies hosting the party. the thing I found stragne was the cops and firemen were two of the same blokes. weird?

A Pakistani cricketer was ‘let off’ recently

So the UAE has finished making an example of westerners for the same offence when committed last year

Never mind the ‘public decency’ and local standards aspect of this.

“…Despite the official reportedly letting them off with a warning, the pair were allegedly discovered in the same position shortly after and arrested….”

These blotto Brits are, in my opinion, guilty of operating a body without a competent driver.

Putting it another way, they’re too stupid to be running around without some sort of keeper. “Foolish” might be a better term.

I am wondering which part did they find offensive the sex on the beach (must have been bad) the fact they are brits…. or what and did they wait until this poor couple had finished their business or break up it up at the main event… I mean come on.. and how would they call witnesses… its all a bit Benny Hill… really….
I can just hear the court transcripts… witness one what did you see… well I saw him and her…
what where they doing … having a cuddle….
the court case must have been a breach of the public decency laws in itself…. hmmm….

And heres the latest…80 arrests in the ‘crack’down we reported…

DUBAI: Undercover police are strolling beaches and manning watchtowers to crack down on topless sunbathing, nudity and other forms of indecent behaviour in Dubai.

Nearly 80 people have been detained in recent days.

The crackdown was launched after police detained a British man and a woman who were allegedly discovered having sex on a beach earlier this month.

“Over the past two weeks, police have detained 79 people for disturbing families enjoying the beach with their behaviour,” said Zuhair Haroun, a spokesman for Dubai’s Criminal Investigation Department.

As a result, Dubai has embarked on a public awareness campaign to remind Western tourists and foreign residents of the country’s traditional values.
