Go! Honour your Father on Father’s Day!

time to honour your father
Arvind here wondering how to celebrate father’s day without my father for the first time in my life. My father passed away six months ago and it still feels a bit surreal.

Father’s day has become an important day of celebration and the fifth most popular purchased greeting cards in the USA are now for father’s day cards. Whereas mother’s day is seen to be more sentimental, father’s day is seen more as a day of practical gift giving such as DIY tools, clothes etc with the most popular gift being a tie.

This day is also a time to remember and honour your father – wherever he is now. I shall be spending some of the time this Sunday by visiting the spiritual retreat in Oxford where my father’s ashes were scattered six months ago. So it will be like being with him once again :-)

The best gift I can give him tomorrow is to continue to live my life in such a way that would always make him proud of me.

What special things will you be doing on Father’s day to honour your father? And what gifts will you be giving him?

show love to your children always

  1. Peace be with you Arvind as you remember your father on this occasion. Our Father’s day isn’t celebrated until September here in Australia although I could honour my father anyday of the year by being with him and listening to his stories and reminding him of how much of an influence he has been in my life and still is.

I hope that your day passes with little or no regrets and that you find solace in the fact that he was a shining star in your life… blessed be

  3. My heart goes out to you Arvid. For me, Father’s Day has never been a happy day. An abusive father who divorced when I was 3 and slowly disappeared, then an abusive stepfather until I was 21. After lots of work in therapy, God then became my Father. But, it isn’t the same. However, my grandfather who passed away in 2002 filled in that empty hole. He would pick me up for school, Santa presents from him were the best, took me fishing, lived with him, went on vacations with him and Grandma, purchased my first real car and walked me down the aisle when I was married. I didn’t deal with his loss until I became really depressed in November 2003 and I’m still working on it as he meant a lot more than I could ever convey. This year I miss him the most. But, I wrote a post about Father’s Day this year which is my gift to him. On the anniversary of his death and on his birthday, I usually have steak fries or apple pie with vanilla ice cream…his favorites.

What is it with you Arvind? Mothers’ Day piffling post followed by a repeat for Fathers’ Day…..

I’ll bet when you were a kid, you were on the side of Walter and the Softies rather than Dennis The Menace (that’s the British version all you American wimps, not that soft core version you have over there).

Oh what will we all be getting father for this big day? Do tell, we are all agog (agog does mean not interested doesn’t it?)

My father was more like my grandfather… and after mourning him on his birthday just last Tuesday I don’t know how to get through Father’s Day. I never really had a dad in my house growing up so I am almost clueless when it comes to that day. I have no idea what to do for my husband…CLUELESS!!! Anyways….

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be today to not have him around for the first time Arvind.

I guess you just have to cherish memories gone by on days like this, and see the positive of having a day that serves as a reminder of good times.
