What photograhers say in other countries to coax a smile:
    Korea:”Kimchi” (pickled cabbage)
    Japan: Whiskey
    Spain: “Patata” (potato)
    Czech Republic: “Fax”
    China: :”Qiezi” (Eggplant)
    Sweden: “Omelet”

I’ve read about that. Why ‘eggplant’ though? Perhaps because it’s a funny veggie.

      • FG,
Its due to the pronounciation - much like we say cheeeeeeeese because it forces our mouth to smile, so the Chinese for Aubergine,
qie zi, would be pronounced ‘cheeea tser’ with the ‘qie’ being pronounced with the second of the four Chinese tones. The second tone is a rising tone, thus forcing a smile, a ‘q’ in pin yin is pronounced ‘ch’ (although one or two regional accents pronounce it ‘chey zi’)

Ref http://www.chinese-outpost.com/language/pronunciation/tones-of-mandarin-chinese.asp for more on the tones used in Chinese, they are bloody difficult for us Westerners and getting the wrong tone can mean something totally different and has got me in trouble many times!
