GO! Smell the earth hour!

March 28th, 2008 by Jim

As many as 5,000 people are expected to take part in a Lantern Parade from 8p to 9pm on Saturday, to mark Earth Hour in Dubai. The start of the parade will be marked by the switching off the Burj Al Arab’s exterior lights and fire fountain, plunging the Dubai icon into darkness. What about where you live? Anything happening?

burj.JPG

Ironic that is one of the most energy zapping structures in Dubai, second to the indoor ski dome as Mrs Sharapova experienced here in Dubai last summer:

Save the world, right?

Earth Hour, which began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, is now a worldwide environmental movement, backed by the WWF, which will see millions of people turn off non-essential lighting. It will roll through 14 time zones, starting in New Zealand and ending in the Pacific Time Zone, sending a wave of darkness across the globe in the biggest voluntary power down in history at 8pm local time on Saturday.

For more information on Earth Hour, to pledge your support and to find out how you can get Earth Hour happening in your home, school and office, go to www.earthhour.org

What will you do to show you support for the climate change initiative. Unplug your laptop? Wear more clothes indoors? Shower instead of soaking in the bath and will it REALLY make a difference? Do tell but don’t be economical with the truth!

we turn our lights off every night… there is one light on in the house and that is the hallway to lead us to the tiolet …
everything else is off…..
We use 3.6 green house gases a year…. according to the carbon footprint calculators… so no problem here…

I’m completely in the dark - didn’t know such a thing existed!
Probably won’t be able to join in as it may clash with new DOctor Who series on TV - I’ll make my contribution later that night.

This idea is awesome! It’s a great way to bring awareness to a problem that will someday consume the world. Humans waste so much. Engery and tangilble items should be privlages and treated as such. Thanks for passing this info along! I would have not known otherwise!

I collect fridges for a hobby. I am not bothered at all about the environment. Not even a little.

Bottom line is people care too much about creature comforts to really do stuff tat would make a difference- like no air travel, no cars, no refrigeration, no air con etc etc etc

I will be at a friend’s birthday party at that time so all lights at home will be off :-)

The birthday party theme is to be dressed up as a feathered bird, so it could get a bit touchy / feely in the dark from 8pm to 9pm. We could get our feathers rumpled.

Hey, that kind of fits with it. Literally, no ‘lighting’ up at all.

I searched the Earth Hour website and found the closest city to me ‘officially’ participating is San Francisco. (why always them?) That’s approximately a two hour drive from me. So, I dug deeper. Turns out two Auburn women (city about 25 miles from me) are promoting Earth Hour.

Regardless, me and my boys are participating. As their website says, “One person can make a difference.” Thanks for the info!

G’Day Express

You can do more than turn your lights off.. although this is a great global initative…. if you turn your appliances off at the wall and not leave them on Standby including the microwave you can save about 40% I think it is on your yearly power usage and save yourself loads of cash to boot…..
just turning the lights off and the tv, microwave, washingmachine etc of at the wall makes a huge difference…
try it see…. My electricity costs are down to $12.00 a week…..

This is really awesome! My roommate and I try to promote being environmentally friendly at our campus. We’re trying to get a group formed to possibly get more kids involved. I’ll definitely be turning out the lights.

Ask DG i’m sure he knows a few people who’d join the group - kid’s involved, lights out

I’ll be watching rugby on TV with all the lights on, whilst the kids are upstairs watching DVD’s. I’ll be popping out to the garden to move the sprinkler occasionally, to ensure that the whole of the lawn is well soaked. at the same time i’ll be chucking the many plastic bags full of empty wine bottles into the bin for collection and transfer to a landfill site. Of course i’ll have to keep the A/C on cos i love to watch the sport on telly with the patio doors open and don’t want to get too hot. I’ll have the missus keep the kettle boiling so that i can have a brew up at full time to go along with my take-away delivered by a guy in a mini-van. The little lady will chuck all the dirty pot’s into the dishwasher when she’s finished loading the washing machine and emptying the tumble dryer. All-in-all it should be a pretty productive hour.
Many thanks to the rest of you Eco-warriors for offsetting my carbon footprint.
I may start Marketing a brand of wode make up, hessian clothing and organic vegtables (supermarket ones dipped in mud) - the GSTF regulars should keep me in petrol for a few years.
