Go! Smell The … incubator?

March 26th, 2008 by Blue Collar Goddess

Evidently, Tom and his wife are having a baby.  They’re due July 3.

Yeah, that’s Tom up there.  Positively glowing.
No, really.  That’s Thomas Beatie.  According to THIS.

Thomas used to be a man.
Uh, nowait.  He IS a man, but he used to be a woman.  So, he used to be a ’she’ but then he sort of changed his mind, and then decided to have his cake and eat it too.   Probably lots of it, what with being preggers and all.  Unless of course he is craving tacos like yours truly here did.  All three times.

Earlier this evening my youngest son (19 yrs. old) laughed hysterically when this popped up on the eleven Oh Clock news, he nearly rolled off the couch — pointing at me and saying something to the effect of, “Women.  Going Extinct.  Like … like … passenger pigeons!”

I didn’t think this was so funny.

“You’ll still need our eggs!” I protested.  This caused a whole new slew of “pigeon or the egg” jokes and the point was sort of lost.

Later, my oldest son (20 yrs. old) came home and I showed him the picture.  He began his best “Arnold” impersonation and reminded me of the movie ”Junior” –

Then the kid said, “It’s okay with me.  We’re all just human, yanno?  We still need each other, what’s wrong with a little empathy?  It’s not as if ALL men are going to want to try this.  There’s some, ah — issues involved.  Don’t freak out mom.”

I wasn’t truly freaking out.  Are you?

That’s right, Rufus! Speak up for us, Honey. ;)

As much as I dislike what Arnie has and is still doing to our state, I did enjoy the movie Junior. Does it bother me that a ‘man’ is having a baby? Not in the least. To each his or her own. It is the child I’m concerned about. News coverage, TV offers, never truly living what we call a normal life. Ooooh, and the picking upon that children can do at school — children are sometimes the cruelest of all.

A woman, then a man & then suddenly decides being a woman is a more attractive option. Is it a joke or a real story? :-)

“Mr Beatie said he and his wife, Nancy, resorted to home insemination after buying an anonymous donor’s sperm from a cryogenic sperm bank.”

On a serious note, what is home insemination & how is it performed? It also opens up another debate, whom the child will call his/her father? Anonymous sperm donor? Or will it be Mr Beatie? :-)

A rather inappropriate tone from an aspiring Founder if anyone cares for Bridget’s opinion.

When someone at Flowers says ‘on a serious note’, the response from founders is usually a helpful one, not a mocking “Laughing My A** Off” refer-to-google. Not everybody has the same extensive general knowledge maybe eh? If one can’t be bothered to share theirs, just leave the question and someone else will answer it.

May I suggest a bit more of a helpful spirit Rufus as you get to learn about Flowers and the much coveted status of “Founder”? Just imagine, if every time someone asks a question about something they don’t know and they systematically get referred to google for their answers. What would be the point of this interactive blog eh?

It’s at times like this that Flowers misses Gareth’s helpfulness. Pedantic and pompous he may have been, but never one to condescend a request for information.

Dubai Guy — truly, I was a bit stunned at your question. It honestly made me wonder at your innocence. Artificial insemination is exactly what it IS, a means of becoming “with child” through artificial means. In other words, NOT by the typical scenario of genitals swapping precious bodily fluids.
There are several different ways this can happen, and because I am not educated beyond what I can find on research articles, I referred you to a popular search engine.
I certainly was not laughing at you, or even with you — I was *laughing* because of the idea of Google advertising artifical insemination.

Ah, Bridget. Please, do tell Dubai Guy all about artificial insemination — and don’t forget the turkey baster as a possible means. I didn’t see you jump on the band wagon other than to offer up a needless spanking. Where was your helpful spirit there?

In the future, whether or not I become a founder, don’t presume I was laughing at anyone and I’ll do my best to ignore your patronizing and condescending tone. Kay? Thanks.

Rufus
My chook is the voice of reason, and when she can she does add the information she has on given questions as do I,
The phase ‘on a serious note’ has more become code like for please explain, I dont understand, is this true, how is it possible etc….

chook was explaining this point to you…. assumptions are always made on blog comments as we do loose the body language content of comments… perhaps if you where a little clearer this would not be issue.. it takes time to learn these things I have had to learn alot myself… get into a pickle sometimes…..

Chook is the least patronising and/ or condesending person on here and quite frankly I dont think she would have patronising bone her body, … she gives flowers a wonderfully balance view…

we made a point a few weeks back not to allow personal attacks on flowers, a lesson for all…. regardless of founder, flower, regular or visitor.. it doesnt matter….
respect is a quality we all must have for the good of all… where is Gareth when you need him……

Hi Aussie –
I don’t know what a chook is.
So I just looked it up on “Google”. Evidently it’s slang for chicken in Australia. Since we called girls “chicks” back here in the 70’s — I’m gonna guess that you’re calling Bridget your “chook”, meaning your “BFF” or Best Friend Forever. Your friend, if BFF is stretching it.

I don’t like her tone. In my opinion it’s rather sniffy and patronizing and I get plenty of that already from people who pay me to pretend as though I deserve it. I don’t have to volunteer for spankings.

Or presumptions. One only has to look at the context in the comments and it becomes brilliantly clear as to what and why I said what I said.

We don’t have to always agree on subjects, but to presume that someone who was in the serious competition for becoming a “founder” would be insensetive ON PURPOSE is a bona fide attack on that persons character.
Me.

It was, uh … UNfounded.

I am simply saying that you were a bit harsh in your response to my friend…
We dont all agree on everything said here as in real life however we do agree that personal attacks or not called for…

I do however like your posting and general comments and thorns are welcome….
GOd nows I cause enough of them myself…
but you do have the wrong impression and I am merely trying to retify that…..
Personalities here are hugely varied, from the everyday ordinary to the totally crazy, I fit more in the latter…. Bridget fits towards the front however can move through them easily…. I wish only to enlighten you on this perception as you where doing with us…

bridget is a well respected member of the founders club and a mediator to all of us…. any new founders will learn how important each of our unique personalities are to the community and each of us in one or another helps not only with this blog but with everyday life…
We do give a hand up when needed, will put people in their place and stick up for each other when someone goes to far….. regardless of if they are a founder or not…. this way the community is looking after each other as a community should…..

And yes chook is a nickname we use in Oz it is a term of friendship, which is only used with good friends I am fortunate to count chook amongst mine….
One day perhaps I will also count you amongst them too… but it a term I only use with great thought….

Btw I got an email of the interview with this Tom Guy…. he married to a woman….. I tell you it would been an interesting marriage considering he didnt the change……

Well… As Tay would have said, Holy Cow!

I was certainly not expecting such a reaction to my comment, so it must clearly mean that I have come across as patronizing when I intended to share insights about a founder’s role. Well then, allow me to apologise for the perceived condescending tone Rufus, as well as for wrongly interpreting your response to Dubai Guy as being one of ridicule. Mike has a point, I should have asked for clarification first.

It seems as well that I may have been poorly inspired to think that a founder should share about Flowers’ implicit values with an aspiring one, so I’ll take that part of my comment back as well.

Happy Posting Rufus.

Chook, thanks for stepping in to be the mediator. Good point you make about the self-regulation aspect of the community. Things may have escalated out of proportion here so hopefully this note clarifies all misunderstandings. I must admit though that I wonder now what kind of reaction we’ll get if ever some day feedback gets delivered by the likes of Angry. Anyways, not my place to comment probably. Bridget Jones — I’d offer up that I was severely sleep deprived and on the verge of playing “Ghetto Monopoly” with the famdamily (you have understand that we arm ourselves with flying verbal abuse) — but I did over react which isn’t common for me.
I’ve been called several things in this Garden Ho’s life, and I take it all with a grain of salt. Several. Grains. Of. Salt. Being insensetive was a new one. My compassion and empathy run deep — it felt like a direct slap.

I stand corrected.
And thanks to your “chook” (GAWD! I love that!) Aussie Cynic for redirecting me back to the post. I missed this.

No no Dubai Guy, I’m not angry! Trust me, this isn’t Rufus angry.
This is Rufus bewildered by reactions that came from left field.

If anyone should apologize dear man, it’s ME! It appears that someone thought I was laughing at you and not behaving appropriately. Of course, this was their assumption of my “VBL” = virtual body language — and evidently you thought so too because you appreciated the “support”.

This does pose a dilemma for me because:
A) I didn’t think you WERE serious about not knowing how people could inseminate themselves in a home environment — I truly thought you were being glib, and
B) I have got to rethink the community posting here because I just won’t fit in if this is going to be the norm rather than the exception, and that just makes me sad. I Love This Place, it’s so quirky and weird! I deplore being underestimated or worse, told that I’ve been insensetive.

I mean Jeez, it’s me, yanno? Rufus?

Oh, wait. I get it.
We’re all just getting to know each other, eh? YEAH! That’s the ticket! You don’t know me, I don’t know you, so it’s best not to jump to conclusions.

I concluded you were being silly when you were being sincere, you both determined I was being insensetive when that was the farthest thing from my mind, and I presumed she was being a condescending fanny when she was really being friendly and helpful?

“I don’t like her tone. In my opinion it’s rather sniffy and patronizing.”

I can see how you could read it that way, but get to know Bridget first before you jump to that conclusion.

Your answer to Dubai Guy just misjudged his question and Bridget was pointing this out. However she misjudged your motivation as well .. “A rather inappropriate tone from an aspiring Founder .”

Easy to do here in comments.

Let’s all give each other some space and ask for clarification before we pass judgments on each other.

Well my friend, the reason I asked that question was to maybe point your attention to the fact that insemination is usualy done under medical supervision. At least this is what I thought, thats why I raised that point. And I had no idea that you could actually buy donor’s sperm & then take it home too !!

Em here by the way.

To be honest, when I looked at the picture, I thought Tom was proudly craddling a paid for beer gut and a small one at that. My brain then did a whole load of somersaults trying to figure out the picture ‘man’ = pregnant.

Still not sure if I get it yet, but hey anything goes these days. One thing I do know is that if childbirth was left to men then the dinosaurs would have outlived the human race. I base this of course on my husband’s reaction to the slightest pain “call an ambulance!”
