Go! Smell A Memory
March 22nd, 2008 by taylorblueToday may be Easter weekend for some…but for me it’s about memories. When I was in Grade 10 my friend dropped dead in gym class. He had been complaining about chest pains all week, and that day the gym teacher said there was no way he was getting out of playing volleyball that day. Well, he played alright. And died. His death shocked everyone…and it wouldn’t be the first friend I would know to die either. He died 17 years ago today. They found out he had a rare heart disease and there would have been nothing they could have done for him, so may be it was better for him to die that way.
The weirdest thing about it was after we came to school and his desk was empty. He used to always be in my way in Math class and I could never see the chalkboard but after…I used to wish he was in my way. He would sit behind me in English, always saying, “Taylor!”, “Taylor!”, “What are you reading today, Taylor?”. How I missed that. (He was reading Tommyknockers by Stephen King when he died, I have vowed never to read that book because of that.) Teachers would be quick to fill those desks, but it was already too late. We knew he was gone and we missed him. Always…
So today, when you are in silence…think about someone…

Hi Taylor.
Bizarre - they’re showing Zammo and Rowland from Grange Hill (80’s kids school based soap series) top 100 classroom hits on Sky at the moment, and although I don’t very often think about the friends I was at school with ( for me school was a task to be endured - I wasn’t very good at it and excelled at being medium mr nice guy - conseqently spending most of the lunchtimes hiding to avoid the bullies) and of all those i counted as my friends, these days i’m only in touch with two of them - my two best friends - 1 never left the area we grew up in, the other in banking. We speak maybe twice a year and the xmas card exchange ritual is usually observed.
If we could go back, would we want too? I don’t think i would and time has a habit of obliterating the worst bits so we’re left with cosy anecdotes etc.
I’m sorry you lost your classmate - what a surreal time it must have seemed.

THanks Jonathan… It was very surreal. At Grade 10 you never think you may lose a friend. And the weirdest thing was being reminded everyday he was gone by seeing the empty desk. Teachers went in really quick to put someone in it…but that didn’t make it any easier. He was in 3 of my 4 classes…and I miss him a lot.
Thanks again!

Sad story Taylor Blue,it brings back the memory when our own Jim had a convulsion in registration class in school,do you remember Jim?? We all thought he was kidding around, including the class teacher! True example of the ‘boy who cried wolf’,we we’re always messing about and all thought it was one of Jimmy’s japes,so glad i’ve not got the memory of a school friend like you have Taylor Blue.
Thanks Bo…not sure if that’s a compliment or not though…

Hi Taylor Blue - amazing isn’t it how we can still picture losses like that so vividly…good for you for keeping your grade 10 bud alive here…
I was in Bo’s class throughout school and one morning I put my bag on the desk before registration and my whole body went numb, shooting pains up & down my arms and I was unable to speak despite wanting to shout out! I went into convulsions and twitched about on the floor and woke up in the medical room 30 minutes later…
IT was a fit / seizure and as Bo & I always used to clown around the teacher thought I was just playing about….
So his point is I’m still about today….just imagine,
NO GO! Smell the flowers
That’s a cute thing how they all thought you were joking…you were just a big joker…good that you have a sense of humor though!!
I’m glad that nothing bad happened because of that seizure….!!!

Oh Taylor
Sending you huge HUGS….. for friends missing and lost…..
Over the years I have lost many friends, suicide, aids, accidents, illness…. etc…. we lost girl in school in horse riding accident… but the worst was a teacher…. she had an arguement with her husband…. he needed to pick up their 3yr old daughter from daycare and he wanted her too as he had a meeting and she had a class….. 30mins later the police came… he had got to day care picked up their daughter the two of them where killed by a truck as he ran a red light through a major intersection….
I can still remember her as she fell apart…….
Remember the fun, the happier times is how I deal with it all, and yes do think about often…. but not that they are gone just what how many they touched when they were here…… and smile when you remember it makes it easier…..

I had to go to a triple funeral before I left my hometown…a house was on fire and the mother and father sent the one son and said we’ll be right out there we just have to get your brother…he was disabled. Well the parents or the brother never came back…and it was such a horrible funeral. The father was a teacher at my school and the mother was my guidance counsler. It was sooooo sad.

Truly sorry for your losses folks. The death of a loved one is such a life changing event, one day they are a part of the daily fabric of your life and the next there is this gaping hole. I’ve only had one death in the family, my grandfather, that’s really affected me so far. Unless you count my dog’s death two year’s ago as well. That was surprisingly painful too. I guess you never really know how much they mean to you until they’re gone.

Hi Taylor, I too know what it is like to feel the loss of someone close to you although my friend isn’t dead, it was a friendship that was not serving my family and so I had to break ties with them at my family’s request. I know how you feel about the loss and I couldn’t imagine anyone dropping dead in front of me.
The only people close to me that have passed on are my grandparents within 6 weeks of each other and their deaths, although making me sad at the time, did not affect me in the way I feel the loss of my friend. Maybe because their time had come and it is life’s cycle afterall. When you hear of someone dying at a young age, it does seem such a loss, but as Aussie says above, celebrate the good times and memories you have of them and be thankful that you know/knew them for what they brought into your life… I guess that’s how I feel about my grandparents.

I know when my friend died it was really my first experience with death. And I know it hurt me even more that my mom wouldn’t let me go to his funeral. But as we all know it wasn’t the first time she would do that to me. I’m glad that I got to know him… but it still hurts to think he’s gone.

i have a similar memory from school, the child didnt die during school though, but was hit by a car, he was infront of me in gym class and i used to tease him alot– wish i never did, hes not even alive for me to apologize now.
i’m sure if you said it out loud he would still hear it…that is a sad story..

We lost a girl in our class who ran out in front of a fast moving car - BAM - gone!
Sorry for your losses guy and funny how they tstay with us in thought.
Sending you some warm thoughts and a big hug your way TaylorBlue. I’m sorry that you lost your friend..reminds me how at time we all tend to take things for granted when we all know that there are no guarantees on tomorrow, for ourselves or anyone else for that matter.
