Go Smell the Dude.

March 16th, 2008 by Funkygirl012003

I find myself using the words ‘dude’ and ‘cool’ a lot. It’s a big part of my vocabulary and I like the casual feel of the words. Yet, I’ve encountered a few quizzical responses when using ‘dude’ in particular, because I’m a female of the species. There seems to be an unspoken assumption among most people that ‘dude’ usage is reserved solely for guys. Of course, I have used ‘dude’ around other girls and that’s where most of the misunderstanding comes in. They seem to think I am calling them a dude, rather than expressing some profound philosophical exclamation.

For me, ‘dude’ has many meanings and uses, not just a casual term for a guy. Sort of like the dude in this Youtube video.

Have you any slang words that you use frequently, but get funny looks over?

Hi Funky girl, Em here.

I used to call people (usually children) either chicken or petal as a term of endearment, but they really had not clue why I was referring to them as a chicken!

As for slang words, I use cool a lot too and hate myself for doing it as I would rather think of something cool to actually say instead!

LOL. You know chicken would have a more insulting connotation over here.

I must admit I always assume dude to be male. I guess its because its most commonly used for males.
As we’ve seen on flowers over the past few months there are loads of words in Elnglish that are very regional - Just wait until AC gets on here!
Some terms that I use that others don’t understand at first;

Blurt - normally derogatory as in ‘Stop being such a blurt’
Hump - as in ‘He’s got the hump’ - He’s not very happy
Busy/Rozzer - Police
Arris - your backside
loads of others as well.

So, do you say something like, ‘Run it’s the Busy’ when the cops come rolling around?

Oh, dude — my word (besides “dood!”) is “phat”.
Everything I “dig” (= another word I use that people tend to wince over) is “PHAT!”

I can’t help it. It just rolls off and out. On a level just under PHAT! is “sweet”.
Most of the time, though, it’s just “PHAT!”

For example, this post is “PHAT!”

———-
oh, for those unitiated to the wiles of Phat = Pretty Hot And Tasty

But typically, I just mean “Wow! That is so cool!”

I always thought it was ‘Pretty, hot and Tempting’ for PHAT. I’ve got to admit that one does irk me though, but it’s interesting how you have your own personal definition for it. PHAT is something that’s cool, but to everyone else it’s an attractive gal.

Hi FunkyGirl

For me:

Chuck

Mate

Tom & Jerry (slang name for my two smaller kids )

Saus (slang nickname for anyone in my family : which gets a bit confusing !)

Oldman

Then there are my special slang names for drivers that annoy me. Like idiot. Prat & stuff. But my daughter tells me off when I talk like this!

Funkygirl… that’s a cool post!! I’m a bit like Em and always wish I could say something cool instead of saying the word cool *blush*

I also use chicken for my kids as an endearment and cheeky monkey or poppet and when in the car with the kids and someone on the road does something I don’t like, I refer to them as a tool… it’s funny how the kids pick it up and repeat “ya tool!!”
