Go Smell the Snow!

March 6th, 2008 by Funkygirl012003

Yesterday, it hailed for several hours and then snowed at some point during the night.   This left us with an end of the season winter wonderland to enjoy here in Ohio.  We spent an hour just chipping our way out of the old snow fort as it were.

Snow Fort

This isn’t my snow fort, but I think it looks cool.  Just needs a little thatching for the roof and a chimmney hole to let out the wood smoke.

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone out to play in the snow or make a snow fort.  Perhaps it’s time for me to take advantage of all of this wonderful packing snow to make the ultimate snowy fortress?  Anyone here ever make snow fortresses or igloos as kids?

Snow FOrt? hard to see that shielding you from flaming ‘injun arrows!

Here in Blighty we have sand castles or we build our own pathetic versions of igloo’s but usually we only have enough snow to throw the odd snowball - shame really.

My next door neighbour bought one of the Porsche Cayennes (the big 4×4 thingy) and is dying for some snow to try out the 4×4 capabilities. Ha - long wait me thinks.

Yeah, sounds like he made the wrong purchase in vehicle there. We try to discourage the use of flamin’ injun arrows here, keeps the kids from putting each other’s eyes out and burning down their homes.

He’ll be disappointed, Cayenne is not the best off roader ever built he’ll find out if he really does go off road.

I watched some of the local Junior Boxheads making a snowman last week but no igloos or forts.
This week we are almost tropical with each day getting up to about 3 deg C, nights still get down to -10C but we are well on the way to summer now. No more -30C!

Far out that’s cold!!! You think 3 deg C is TROPICAL? You are kidding… right? Brrrrrrrrr… having always lived near the beach with mild temperatures, I would like to stay where I am thanks. I’m sure you have all the proper attire for those kinds of extremities, but I cannot imagine living in a climate like that… I’m shivering just thinking about it.

Too bad Angesbiz, you might enjoy a walk in the snow or the chance to catch snowflakes on your tongue!

With the right clothes a fresh crisp cold day is great. Its a strange feeling but everything is just so new, virginal and fresh looking. After a long stroll in the snow its great to come inside and have a steaming hot cup of tea/coffee/chocolate and knock up a big bowl of spicy stew/chilli/curry/broth.

Our summers get up to about 30C so we get the best of both really, I prefer the mix of a real winter and a real summer.

Oh, Hi, O - We mean Funkygirl and welcome back to flowers with this post..

Used to make snow blogs with old ice cream / butter tubs on the odd occasion when it was cold enough to build something that lasted in the UK - 1981 was the coldest winter we remember -water froze in pipe, pipes burst - no school!!

We do wonder though, how does the snowplough guy get to work?

Actually Jim - sounds like you missed the winter of 88 (or 89) when we were without power for about 3 days in derbyshire. Luckily my mum-in-law had a gas cooker so we eat and huddled there! Oh it was just like the war.

Christmas 2006 down here our first one in this town and it snowed middle of Summer…. snow fights on Gormy hill… (haha you dont know where that is hehehehehe…) then in August 2007 it was so cold over night that I had to use a hammer to open the driveway gates, had to put cold water into the door locks to open then… and run the hose on the windscreen…..

Gareth did you hear about the Aussie HiJacked in Xian China….. they are saying the bomber was killed?????

No, and our snow has already melted too, but we’re expecting another winter storm this friday so that should bring a little more of the white stuff.

I used to build snow igloos when I lived in Scotland as a kid. Except they were small ones … for my Action Man. heh heh. I think he got frostbite and his plastic fingers fell of. He got shot in the chest after that as he couldn’t fire his gun to protect himself.

Sad really. I think polar bears ate his body.

Talking about Action figures .. did I ever tell you about the time I swapped my babysitters pressies left at the foot of me and my brothers bed? Before my brother (Nick) woke up I swapped them over. He had a Captain Kirk figure. I had Spock. I mean I had to have Kirk. I just had to.

I feel bad.
