Monopoly: Didn’t you just love it as a kid? Here’s a clip from The Dandelion Tree in which the game features …

Ishmael sat watching Mr Punch and Pretty Polly frolic in the water, as he languished in jail on the Monopoly board. In his pocket he felt the sharp blade of his knife against his finger. Next to him sat Scaramouche, who was looking at the policeman.

‘I’m out of money,’ said the blind man to the policeman. ‘I can’t pay you.’

‘You cheat,’ said Scaramouche grabbing the policeman’s black book. Monopoly cards fell from the open pages, as he threw it to the floor.

‘Steady Scaramouche,’ said the policeman, ‘remember who you are dealing with.’

Scaramouche laughed, got to his feet and kicked the Monopoly board high into the air. Plastic houses and metal icons span into the sky; cards took flight as if a flock of birds startled.

So then, now get stuck in and visit here, to vote for your fav city to be included in the World Edition.

Thanks to Steve from cymru66 where I first saw this and who asks people to vote for his city Cardiff here.

And do let us know what city you would vote for and if you loved the game or hated it!

    Hi Mike,
I definitely loved Monopoly as a kid, but it was the type of game that kids liked to play on a rainy, Saturday afternoon. It takes hours to have a good game of monopoly, and the rules seem to get murky depending on who you play with. I know folks who all the money that they pay from “Chance” and Community Chest” into the center of the board and the player who rolls “snake eyes” gets the cash. I know others who have bizarre made up rules for getting out of jail. As far as voting for a city for Monopoly, I vote for New York City, of course. Great Scene from “The Dandelion Tree.” “Scaramouche” is a terrific name. Thanks Mike 1. -Mike 2

    SCARAMOUCHE, SCARAMOUCHE…

Thunder bolt and lightening, VERY VERY frightening!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irp8CNj9qBI - tell us that was the inspiration for the name?

Great name indeed. Great game also.

Loved monopoly and used to LOL when anyone (normally Mum) bought the cheapest place, Old Kent road in the London version whilst I always opted for the green strip of Bond street et al.

Cymru 66 has some fantastic posts and we heard you can personalise your own monoploy board with names of relatives and streets of yesteryear.

City would have to be Dubai but we’d suggest a hologram version as the names are contantly changing as new buildings pop up and new districts are formed…

Right, time to get out of jail, for freeeeeeeeeee.

    • mike says:

      Go! to Jail Jim&Em
      Go! straight to Jail
      Do not pass Go!

      sorry

      er

No Scaramouche ended up in my novel, not from Queen’s song but because of his links with Punch and Judy who are in the book.

(Scaramouche is one of the iconic characters in the Punch and Judy puppet shows (a performative art with roots in commedia dell’arte).)

I originally had a sureal scene where Scaramouche and the Punch & Judy gang act out Bohemian Rhapsody but I edited it out.

Monopoly - confession time - I’ve never played but enjoyed CLEUDO.

My City would be London, I guess the board has cobbled streets, right :-)

    • gareth in China says:

Nope no cobbled streets but you have to pay 15GBP to pass through certain parts for congestion charging.
Around the south you get stabbed by a teenage gangster rapper and every third go you must give all your money to a bunch of Romanian or Albanian gangsters.
For the go to jail square you simply put a turban on your playing piece, change its religion, lodge an appeal and never go there.
Free parking doesn’t exist - its at least 20GBP per day but you have to miss 6 turns finding the square.
You have to pay 100GBP per go to the Euro monopoly syndicate playing in Brussels regardless of income or expenditure.
Your 200GBP for passing go can’t always be paid as the chancellor has spent the money on a war with someone playing with a chemistry set in the middle east but every three turns someone bombs your square and your metal playing token blasts out of the window causing you to miss three turns and allowing the banker to pass new laws to randomly send your piece to prison (the turban and appeal don’t work in this instance).

Other than that the London version is identical.

      • arvind says:

So Gareth, just what didn’t you like about London on your recent trip?!

You forgot to mention the pubs and clubs you can no longer smoke in, the dirty curry houses on every corner and the jobless beggars on the pavements :-)

I look forward to meeting you in London on your next trip and sharing some of the good things the real London offers.

I am off now for a walk once I have put my turban on - in case I need it for any appeals along the way…

  5. Bridget used to love Monopoly Mike! She’d play for hours with her mates as a kid, and they sometimes designed their own rules/ instructions to make it more fun!!

It’s been years I haven’t played! Anyone for cyber-monopoly with Bridget..?

One city she’d like featured? Paris of course ha! ;)

  6. jonathan says:

yes they don’t get much more swash-buckling than this - apart from Errol Flynn of course.

  7. fab says:

    LOL you two!

Flowers could start a ‘get it off your chest -at the COMMUNITY’ - kinda a monopoly froum :-)
