Go! Smell the wonderful world of Reggae music!

November 24th, 2007 by Gary

Gary here! I have decided to educate the masses on here on one of my passions in life - reggae.

Jamaic Jamaica

It is an exceptionally broad musical genre with numerous styles from roots, revival, ragga, bashment, lovers rock, dub………… the list goes on. To show the depth of reggae music types I have linked three very different tunes that all come under the heading of reggae.

So what are your experiences of reggae? Do tell.

Three different tunes. Opinions please. Good bad or indifferent? Do share!

Buju Banton -Driver A

t.o.k. - Footprints

Black Uhuru -Sinsemillia

GO! Give us some feedback and if you have any reggae questions I am as ever I’m here to help!

Gary, listened to all 3,and to me the Sinsemillia track is what i would, from my knowledge call reggae..Bob Marley style. I like that track a lot and like Bob Marley and UB40,what type of reggae are they?

Thanks Gary for this.

Maybe when we meet on Thursday we should check out some Reggae tunes.

I hear Brixton is good for this, but a bit far from Marble Arch…

Having listened to all 3, the 3rd is the one I can listen to probably because it’s more what I would associate with reggae and more mainstream.

What is it that you like about Reggae Gary?

I like the beat IO like the way the bass dictates the music as opposed to the music dictating the bass.

‘dutchie’ is a reference to a dutch pot which is a west indian cooking pot. However the original version used to be ‘pass the kutchie’ kutchie being a shortened version of ‘kushenpeng’ which is a weed pipe. so the lovely musical youth were in fact encouraging all to smoke weed.

Saw Ziggy Marley perform recently - he looks spookily like his Dad - he was very good but the audience only went bonkers when he sang some of Bob’s songs - shame!

I liked Black Uhuru best.

Don’t mind most forms of Reggae depends on my mood of cause…

i like it when a Reggae beat is added to a popular style mostly it can just work…. but yeh Bob Marley is probably the only main artist I know … hmmm that is disgraceful of me… note to self must investigate other forms of reggae and caribean music…..hmmm.yep!
thanks for bringing this to my attention mate

What about Ronnie’s music?
You can’t just post about one of the Kray twins, its racialistic disciminilisationalist.

Great post Gary!

I must admit that I have a thing for reggae music… I like the third tune - Black Uhuru -Sinsemillia the best. Bob Marley is my favorite reggae artist.
