Pay it Forward

Posted on November 8th, 2007 by angesbiz

Ange here from Buzzing with Ange. I love all these posts here at flowers! Good stuff.

I’m feeling a little sentimental today and want to ask if you remember the movie Pay It Forward with Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Hale Joel Osment! In case you haven’t seen it, Hale’s character decides that he is going to do a good deed for three people who in turn will do a good deed for another three people each and so on. Pay it Forward! So rather than expect something back, the good deed was meant to be passed on.

Anyway, a little while ago on my blog, I wrote a list of some things that you could give or do that wouldn’t cost you in dollar terms. It went like this:

  • Give information. Write articles or a blog in order to share your knowledge freely with others.
  • Give talents. Use your skills and help someone who maybe cannot afford to pay for it.
  • Give acknowledgement. Smile at people, give someone a kind word, or acknowledge someone for a job well done!
  • Give encouragement. Be supportive of those around you and let them know you care.
  • Give thoughts. Intend the best for people. Pray or meditate for others if those practices have meaning for you.
  • Give touch. Give someone a pat on the back, a hug or a massage. Give someone a night of wild passion!

Is there something you can think of that you could give that wouldn’t cost you in dollar terms that may not be on this list?

Give someone some flowers from your garden :-)

Clear out all the clutter from your house and give it to charities that can use it.

Great Post Ange, some people are just so busy that they do not focus on anything other than themself and what they want from life.

I believe what you give out, you get back many times over.

  4. arvind says:

Great idea Mel about clutter clearing and giving to charities.

It is the Indian Diwali tomorrow which signifies the end of the year and the triumph of good over evil.

So today I am spending some time clearing out a few things even though I am fairly clutter free.

It is amazing how much you feel better once things are cleared out - this changes the energy all around us.

    • Mel says:

Couldn’t agree more Arvind, you feel as though you really can do anything with the energy it gives you.

Happy Diwali - enjoy and light one for me!!!

Oh dear Gary, with your list of what YOU could give, I’m glad that I only know of you here. What is it that has you so negative? Do you get given all those things that you have listed? You just reminded me of how miserable my grandfather used to be. Although he lightened up quite a bit towards the end.

I am a great believer in what goes around, comes around. It really isn’t difficult to smile at someone. In fact, did you know that you use up more energy frowning than you do smiling? and smiling makes you feel a whole lot better than frowning!!!

      To each their own.

      • Gary says:

AND Did you know it tooke you a lot more energy to tell me the thing about smilin than frowning than it would to have just not bothered?

its called humour love. its called sarcasm.

        but on a serious note.

all my points are valid just because they do not fit in with your happy clappy view of life does not make them any less so. just a different viewpoint to yours.

        • angesbiz says:

Too true Gary - valid, yes of course they are.

As I said, to each their own.

        • Lord Likely says:

‘Did you know it tooke you a lot more energy to tell me the thing about smilin than frowning than it would to have just not bothered?’

God rest Mr. Bill Hicks. You…you were quoting the late Mr. Hicks, weren’t you Gary, and not merely trying to pass his great wit off as your own?

(Word to the wise, though, Gary, if you are going to use a deceased comedian’s lines, at least try to spell them correctly and punctuate them properly. There’s a good chap.)

          • Gary says:

Likely the rip off accusing someone else of ripping someone off. oooooh the irony.

How long did you spend creatively devising your cartoons and are you still not allowed within 300yrds of a school to show them to the kids?

  8. arvind says:

And give Gary a bullet :-)

    • Gary says:

do you get bullets for free arvy?

or do you get the kids in your sweatshop/school to knock them up for you?

I’d give Arvind a reality check.

Also do you think arvy that someone with a failed marriage should be giving advice about relationships? seriously?

its like going to a bankrupt for advice on how to run a profitable business.

      • arvind says:

        Hi Gary,

Thanks your kind of reality check.

I am sure we can get a free bullet for you near Euston Sauna!

It is good to know that you read the comments on other articles and you can cross comment. I don’t see my ex-marriage as a “failed” marriage. I learnt a lot of lessons about how to be and also how not to be in a relationship.

Lessons which you will learn too soon in your blossoming relationship with the lucky lady in Italy :-)

Also, note that a coach does NOT directly advise about relationships or anything else for that matter so it is irrelevant about my past. What it relevant is that I have dealt with any issues and I don’t bring those to the table.

I wonder what issues you have to deal with it yet?!

        • Gary says:

so a coach doesn’t directly advise.

so its not real coaching is it

a boxing coach shows you how to box a life coach erm…….. listens

there are only 2 rules in my relationships

          rule 1- gary is right
rule 2- revert to rule 1

bottom line is I let them stay as long as they suit then drop like them like a bad habit as soon as they have served their purpose. the italian is sound though- I may keep her.

As for my issues - I don’t have any to deal with. did it years ago. I know what matters to me what I want and how to get it.

          simple really

          no lists

          no third parties listening

          no self-help books

          no crystals

          no reiki healing

          no homeopathy

          no unproven pseudo-science

          no cartoon carrots

          no burmese skinheads

          no faux-green concerns

          no god

          no aliens

          no colonics

I could go on. but you get the point. we should meet up for a pint arvind seriously- I could show you the way

          • arvind says:

Thanks Gary - we all know where you stand now - and where you don’t.

I love a challenge and I accept the gauntlet you have thrown down, even though I don’t drink pints.

Where and when shall we meet?

Euston road, near your favourite sauna?!

  11. Great post and some wonderful points to consider…in regards to the “Pay it Forward.” concept…it presents people to be more then they might choose to be in a typical situation and opens up possibilities for new experiences …the best memories I have in life of kindness has been through the concept of “Pay it forward”
    thanks for reminding me!

  12. Jim & Em says:

We will pay forward $50 of free flowers every 2-3 weeks and reckon it may lead to us being the choice for flowers or at least making someones day with our contests…!

  13. arvind says:

I was once stopped by a driver who was desperately looking for some change for her parking meter. I simply filled up the meter for her and the look on her face was worth every penny!

I asked her to keep paying it forward and I can just imagine the number of people who she imapcted that day.

It takes so little to show some kindness and it comes back to us manyfold.

    • This reminds me of one time when I was attending a seminar where this 20 yr old guy stood up to tell us a similar story.

He had 40 minutes to wait to catch a country train and was wondering how to fill in his time! So he went to the store to buy a bunch of FLOWERS… lol… his intention was to give them to someone who looked like they could use them, and the impact he made on those people that night (he did this 3 times) was incredible. One girl was so thrilled that she gave him a kiss!! Just goes to show that people do appreciate little random acts of kindness.

Good for you Arvind, and I bet she has never forgotten you and tells that story to all her friends :)

It’s the scattergun technique for getting a bunk-up. If he’d carried on that guy would have got a feel of some birds air bags and eventually his leg-over.

  14. Lib says:

There was a radio show recently in the UK where are a guest presenter decided to do something similar to this. She instructed everyone to perform an act of kindess (non-sexual Gary) throughout the day.

There is a toll road on the M6 motorway where you pay at the end of the road and it started with the one guy paying the next persons charge (I’ve had to put charge because I can’t remember how you spell fayre/fair).

Anyway, this went on for 32 people. Good eh?

  15. arvind says:

    Excellent fare, Libby :-)

Don’t give Advice… So many Do gooders around not to hand any over would be a breathe of fresh air…
Only Smile when your up too something… give people something to think about….
Only Borrow money from Pessimists the don’t expect to get it back…. so there is no disappointment there…
    Yep thats my top three!!!

  17. dubaidave says:

Quality attitude A/C - you and Gary should get together!

  18. Give space! Stop crowding people all the time with advice, opinions, whatever. Let them breathe ha!

Give closure - Stop holding on to things that are gone, lost, imagined. Tie loose ends if you must, but then get on with life ha!

  19. AngryFromEllesmerePort says:

Been away for a few days - tried to give touch - and got banged up

  20. Gary says:

I say we meet in a couple of weeks.

Anywhere in Central Londinium is fine. Currently work in Fulham.

    what is your tipple?

    I reckon elderflower wine.

  21. arvind says:

Great - send me an email via my blog and we can meet in central London.

Our lives might never be the same again!

    Normally drink champagne :-)

  22. Gary says:

    sounds good

do they serve that in Wetherspoons?

    joke!

  23. gareth in China says:

Why not make it a ‘group flowers hug’ as admin annoyingly trot out so regularly.
Saturday 22 December. Toffees versus the Mancs on TV and myself and Gary coaching Arvind on how to drink a pint, Arvind coaching us on how not to.

  24. Jim & Em says:

Now that would make for a great blog post here…

  25. arvind says:

ok - let’s make it happen.

Gary - I look forward to meeting you soon.

  26. gareth in China says:

I’ll no doubt be a 12.45 kick off so meet up about 12.15 to get a couple down before kick off.
I’ll mail you nearer the time.
We could drink bitter instead, pint of Flowers?
